Memphis Grizzlies basketball phenom Ja Morant has made his alma mater proud. The dazzling guard, who dominated courts for two seasons at Murray State University, was inducted into the university's Hall of Fame on July 27, solidifying his status as a collegiate legend. The ceremony, eagerly attended by a sea of fans, family, and key figures from both his past and present life, was a testament to Morant’s undeniable impact on the court and within the community.
According to FOX13 Memphis, Murray State University held the induction at Racer Hoopalooza, celebrating Morant's remarkable college career that spanned from 2017 to 2019. In an attempt to showcase humility and reflection on his journey, Morant admitted at his youth camp that the recognition was an overwhelming honor. "There's a lot of people that have won an NBA game before, there's a lot of people that have probably had a triple-double before but you can't say too many have actually gone into the hall of fame at their college," Morant said, according to a Local Memphis interview.
"This guy is the real deal, he is the real deal," said Matt McMahon, Morant's former head coach at Murray State and now head coach at LSU, in a statement obtained by Local Memphis.
The support from the Memphis Grizzlies organization was duly noted, with Head Coach Taylor Jenkins and General Manager Zach Kleiman making the trip to witness Morant's hallmark moment. "We all went through that situation together, but y’all holding it down and standing by my side means so much to me and my family and I appreciate you, even coming now with everything going on like the draft and summer league, I appreciate y’all and it shows the love and support y’all have for me so just know it is reciprocated," Morant told an Action News 5 interview.
