The latest weather update from the National Weather Service in Memphis forecasts a largely sunny day today with temperatures climbing to a sweltering high near 95 degrees. For Memphis residents, this means bracing for heat index values which could reach as high as 104, indicative of potentially dangerous heat conditions.
In a communication earlier this morning, the NWS indicated calm winds this morning will pick up slightly, turning southwest at around 5 mph in the afternoon. As the sun sets, the skies are expected to remain mostly clear with a comfortable low settling around 75 degrees. Similarly, the outlook for Monday doesn't stray far from today's conditions, with sunny skies and a high once again near 95 degrees. The evenings promise some respite, although night-time temperatures for Monday are predicted to hover around 77 degrees.
The week ahead seems situated under the unyielding gaze of the sun, as Tuesday's forecast anticipates even higher temperatures, possibly touching 97 degrees. However, a note of change comes with the NWS predicting a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms rolling in late Tuesday night, which continues into the next day with a 40 percent likelihood of precipitation beginning in the afternoon.
On Wednesday and into the night, chances of showers and thunderstorms increase, particularly after 1am with the NWS projecting a 60 percent chance of wet weather. Thursday will likely follow this pattern, offering a temporary cooldown with highs reaching near 84 degrees and a congruent chance of showers and storms throughout the day. Residents can find further details and updates on the NWS website.
As the week unwinds, the NWS foresees a dip in nighttime temperatures with lows around 68 degrees Thursday through Saturday and daytime highs ranging from the mid to upper 80s.
