The streets of Washington D.C. saw a substantial amount of illegal firearms taken out of circulation last week, as the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) placed numerous individuals under arrest while gathering up a collection of weapons that included various pistols, assault rifles, and even a BB gun, their efforts detailed in a recent report.
In their ongoing fight against gun violence, MPD units spanning from specialized divisions to routine patrol officers recovered a total of 42 firearms during the period from July 15 to July 22, 2024, which included handguns of various calibers, assault rifles, and "Ghost Guns"—unserialized and often home-assembled firearms that authorities are increasingly concerned about.
Significant recoveries detailed in the report included the arrest of 22-year-old Isaiah Rasheed Boyd after fleeing from law enforcement in possession of a Glock 26 and an illegal ammunition feeding device, while in another incident, police confiscated an AR-15 .300 caliber "Ghost Gun" assault rifle and arrested 20-year-old Anthony D. Butler for multiple charges, including the prohibited consumption of marijuana in a public space; such enforcement actions offer narratives of crime interdiction amidst a backdrop of a society entangled in debates pertaining to the Second Amendment rights and public safety.
Among the youthful arrests, a concerning trend seen was the apprehension of two teenagers, a 14-year-old from Fort Washington, MD, and a 15-year-old from Southeast, D.C., both found with serious firepower.
