A 49-year-old man was arrested following a standoff with Michigan State Police at a Royal Oak Township home that occurred in the early hours yesterday. According to WWJ Newsradio 950, the situation began when a desperate 911 call captured the man threatening violence against a woman, the responding officers, and himself.
As detailed by the police, the man's comments overheard by dispatchers escalated the incident: "If the police come in here, I’m shooting you, I’m shooting them, and myself," he declared, as per FOX 2 Detroit. The standoff was initiated around 2:50 a.m. on Mitchelledale Ave., near 8 Mile Rd. Instead of attempting to directly engage, officers established a perimeter and coaxed the occupants of the house to come out using a patrol vehicle's public address system.
Critical negotiation efforts by dispatchers led to the victim re-establishing phone communication, which allowed MSP troopers to converse directly with the suspect, eventually persuading him to surrender. "Troopers were able to speak with the suspect and convince him to surrender," police stated. Subsequently, a Taurus 9mm pistol and a Winchester 20g shotgun were seized from the property, confirming the existence of the threatened firepower, according to FOX 2 Detroit.
Upon the arrest, Lieutenant Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police lauded the successful de-escalation of a potentially lethal confrontation. "Great work by dispatchers and troopers to be able to deescalate this situation, and resolve it safely," Shaw praised, as cited by WXYZ.
