For the civic-minded teens eager to directly participate in shaping their community's future, the City of Milton has flung open the doors to its new Youth Government Leadership Program. Announced yesterday, this initiative is designed to groom the next generation of public servants from the ranks of local high school juniors and seniors.
Milton's young residents now have the chance to deeply engage with the mechanisms of government operation, gaining firsthand experience that might just spark a lifelong commitment to public service. According to the official release by the City of Milton, the program will run over 12 weeks, with selected students afforded the opportunity to intricately explore different aspects of governmental processes under the experienced wing of a city leader.
Emphasizing a practical approach, participants will aim to quickly assess community needs and jump headfirst into projects with potentially lasting impact. Each semester, one slot is especially reserved for Fulton County Schools' TAG students, while another is open to any qualified student, regardless of their institution, as reported by the city's announcement. The program is structured to accommodate four students each school year, ensuring focused attention and quality mentorship for each participant.
The Youth Government Leadership Program boasts comprehensive components from Milton's previous initiatives, melding the engagement of the Citizens Government Academy with the insight of the Comprehensive Summer Internship. This synergy is meant to provide something beyond the classroom – it aims to give teens a substantial, realistic taste of public service careers. Students will conclude their participation with a "Capstone Project," anticipated to be presented before the City Council or another committee within the Milton government structure, as per the city's announcement.
Interest among local high schoolers is expected to be high, and the clock is ticking: the deadline to submit applications for the fall 2024 semester is August 23. Community Outreach Manager Emily Salerno can be contacted at [email protected] for further queries regarding the program, as informed by the city's communication. This initiative presents an invaluable opportunity for students to not only understand but to also actively contribute to the inner workings of their local government.
