In a move aimed at reinventing public safety, the Minneapolis City Council has endorsed a new collective bargaining agreement with the Minneapolis Police Officers Federation, which City Council President Elliott states will permit a scalable police force responsive to the city's demands and upholds officer accountability, according to the City of Minneapolis. Elliott emphasized the incorporation of public opinion in the decision-making process, highlighting efforts to maximize transparency, including public hearings and marked-up contract drafts for review which some political voices were quick to politicize, the decision to give the public time to review this marked a deliberate departure from past practices.
Changes to the contract include eliminating the 70/30 staffing ratio for patrol officers, allowing shift assignment based on community needs, and adding civilian investigators to introduce more staffing flexibility, moves that Council President Elliott believes will enable a shift in focus to violence prevention programs and other alternative responses, and give the administration the tools it needs to hold officers accountable, the City of Minneapolis stated.
The Community is also looking at future projects including resurfacing St. Anthony Parkway and requesting input on the new design plans for phase 2 of Lowry Avenue in an online forum, the city hopes this will be a collective community effort with local feedback shaping the outcome, for those interested in contributing opinions on the Lowry Avenue project have until July 19 to submit their comments on the design, as per the City of Minneapolis.
Moreover, Minneapolis residents now have the opportunity to participate in programs ranging from more affordable transit fares through the Transit Assistance Program to support for Black business development during Minneapolis Black Business Week, which includes pop-up markets, a career and networking fair, and walking tours of local business areas, these offerings reflect a citywide push for inclusivity, economic development, and accessibility.
