The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) is actively investigating a series of violent occurrences that have rocked the city over recent days, resulting in three homicides and several other injuries due to gun violence. According to information from the MPD, Chief Brian O’Hara revealed that the department is looking into multiple murders following a spate of violence that began last Thursday. O’Hara called for immediate collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, including the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), to increase police visibility and respond to the incidents effectively. The official statement also detailed that investigators do not currently believe the events are connected.
To urgently tackle the situation, Chief O’Hara also mentioned integrating efforts with community organizations and violence interrupters. I’m deeply grateful to our law enforcement and community partners who have stepped up on a moment’s notice to help us try to track down those responsible for these heinous acts and to help us put an end to the violence,” O’Hara communicated in a press briefing. Following an emergency MPD command staff meeting, a multi-jurisdictional plan was enacted to share critical information among various law enforcement partners and to strategize immediate intervention.
The 10 incidents, ranging from shootings to a fatal stabbing, have left the community shaken. In one instance, an adult male was shot and later died from his wounds on the 2600 Block of 3 AV S, and in another, a 31-year-old man lost his life to a stabbing during a party on the 3400 block of Penn Av N. Officers have been tirelessly responding to these and other violent events, providing medical assistance, and processing scenes for evidence. The MPD is encouraging anyone with information regarding any of the violent acts to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously to CrimeStoppers and may even lead to a financial reward for information resulting in an arrest and conviction.
As the investigations continue, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office will release the identities of the deceased, along with the cause and manner of each death.
