Baltimore and Washington DC residents can expect a bit of everything from Mother Nature over the next few days – a cold front today, clear skies over the weekend, and a return of thunderstorms early in the workweek. According to the National Weather Service Baltimore, today will bring a cold front moving south of the area with anticipated scattered showers and possible isolated thunderstorms extending into the early evening, especially around central Virginia and the I-64 corridor. Mariners should note a Small Craft Advisory in effect until 1 PM EDT for increased winds.
Over the weekend, a collective breath of relief comes as high pressure builds, making for mostly clear and less humid conditions. It will be hot though, with temperatures flirting with the 90-degree mark. A slight shift arrives Monday when high pressure moves offshore, paving the way for increasing moisture and precipitation chances – the latter mostly to the west of the Blue Ridge. Yet, the I-95 corridor north of Fredericksburg is forecast to stay dry, with highs expected in the upper 80s to low 90s and overnight lows in the upper 60s to 70s.
Anyone flying in or out of the region at the start of the week should see generally good conditions, with the National Weather Service predicting "Prevailing VFR conditions are expected Monday and Tuesday." Winds from the south may gust up to 15 knots. Boat owners and enthusiasts should watch out for possible Small Craft Advisories again by Tuesday afternoon as conditions may get choppier with those southerly winds persisting.
A shift in weather pattern is on the horizon by mid-week with an upper-level trough hovering over the east coast, which should ratchet up daily chances for showers and thunderstorms. As we head into late July, temperatures will creep higher still, reaching into the mid-90s. Overnight, expect the temperatures to linger in a more moderate zone, spanning from the upper 60s to mid 70s.
