A tense standoff that began yesterday afternoon on Interstate 35 near Faribault, Minnesota, came to an end after hours of negotiation and the deployment of non-lethal tactics by law enforcement. According to Rice County Minnesota, the whole ordeal began when a 41-year-old man was involved in a vehicle pursuit with the Southeast Minnesota Violent Crime Enforcement Team and subsequently took to the interstate on foot, armed with a handgun.
Traffic was brought to a standstill as the suspect, whose name has yet to be released, made his way onto the southbound lanes of I35 at approximately 2:52 p.m., as per Rice County Minnesota. Shifting the ordinary flow of cars and commerce to a frozen tableau of tension and potential violence, the interstate closure stretched on for hours, with area residents instructed to take shelter and avoid the area. In response, multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Minnesota State Patrol and South Metro SWAT, converged on the scene.
Throughout the incident, officers on site worked to bring about a peaceful resolution. They repeatedly urged the suspect to surrender and lay down his weapon. Despite these efforts, the man did not comply and discharged his firearm several times, the shots puncturing the relative silence of the deserted highway. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported to either the public or police personnel.
As the standoff extended into the evening, law enforcement used non-lethal means to subdue and apprehend the suspect around 7 p.m., as detailed by Rice County Minesota. The multi-agency response included the efforts of the Minnesota State Patrol Special Response Team and, a drone unit from Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, among others. Notably, no lethal force was employed during the detention of the suspect.
