Marylanders may notice a fresh design when they look at the car ahead, with the latest Maryland license plates sporting a new look focused on Chesapeake Bay conservation. According to WMAR-2 News, the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) and the Chesapeake Bay Trust have unveiled the fourth iteration of Bay plates, first introduced in 1990 and last updated in 2018.
The newest addition to the series, which emphasizes the protection of the Chesapeake and Coastal Bays, can be bought for $20 across various locations including MVA offices, car dealerships, and online outlets. Sporting over 370,000 drivers displaying the Bay tags, Maryland shows a considerable passion for the visual shout-out to their natural heritage. According to a WBAL-TV report, the Maryland Coastal Bays Program emphasizes the significant environmental role and economic contribution of the Coastal Bays to the state.
Kevin Smith, the executive director of the Maryland Coastal Bays Program, stressed the value of the bays in a statement, "The environmental role of the Coastal Bays is an important part of Maryland’s myriad natural resource landscape as is the significance of its overall economic contribution to Maryland," as reported by WBAL-TV.
More than just a decorative plate, the Bay tags are a funding engine for the Trust, directing most of the revenue towards grants for local organizations each year. These grants support an array of projects from enhancing wildlife habitats to improving water quality and propelling education, and awareness initiatives. While only a small cut goes to the MVA, the fiscal impact of the plates translates into tangible environmental benefits throughout Maryland. Consumers searching to align their vehicle with their values can simply grab the new plates at an MVA office, through a car dealership, tag-and-title agency, or snag them online.
