The North Carolina Department of Transportation has announced a new way for drivers to save on tolls with the launch of the NC Only account, a move that is sure to be welcomed by local motorists. The changes to the NC Quick Pass system aim to directly reduce the costs for users who frequently travel on North Carolina toll roads. Drivers without a transponder can now save 35% on tolls, and the pre-paid balance requirement for new accounts has been cut by half to $10, as reported by QCNews.
In an adaptation to more frequently meet customer needs, NC Quick Pass will now evaluate account minimum balance requirements monthly instead of quarterly. This update is designed to provide a more immediate reflection of customer toll usage. The NC Only account benefits those who drive primarily on local toll facilities, including the Triangle Expressway, Monroe Expressway, and I-77 Express Lanes. The account operates by registering the vehicle’s license plate, with toll payments subsequently deducted from the prepaid account balance, as detailed by WNCT.
This change targets specifically those customers who do not travel outside of North Carolina's toll roads, negating the need for a transponder. It also appears tailor-made for families and small businesses that operate less than ten vehicles and do not require the expanded functionality of the full NC Quick Pass account which covers 18 other states. According to a WNCT report, the NC Only account ensures the same 35 percent discount on North Carolina tolls as the other account options available.
For motorists planning to drive across state lines or those who need to set HOV status in the I-77 Express Lanes, NCDOT advises that the standard NC Quick Pass account, which does require a transponder, would be the appropriate choice. Drivers can sign up for the new NC Only account online at ncquickpass.com or through the NC Quick Pass app, offering a quick and convenient method to begin saving on tolls right away.
