The North Versailles community is experiencing a sense of loss as it bids farewell to a former four-legged officer. K-9 Laky, a Belgian Malinois, who dedicated nine years of loyal service to the town, passed away recently, as confirmed by the local North Versailles Police K-9 Unit, per WPXI.
Laky's tenure was marked by an important partnership with Chief Locke, with whom he not only managed to actively ensure regional security but also to deeply bond. "Laky began his service at a young age and quickly became an indispensable asset to the community. Chief Locke and Laky shared an unbreakable bond, formed over years of partnership, countless hours of training, and shared moments of both danger and respite", the North Versailles Police K-9 Unit said, according to WPXI.
Throughout his active years, Laky was well-known for his innate abilities and was crucial in the apprehension of suspects and detection of narcotics. His presence was noted to be especially impactful during community engagements, including visits with children in schools. Described as "a true hero," the K-9 was not just seen as a protector but also as an "ambassador of goodwill," as per the unit's Facebook post, cited by CBS News Pittsburgh.
After he retired from active duty, Laky was able to comfortably relax at home, surrounded by his family and furry siblings. Despite his absence, his legacy is expected to strongly linger through the department and community. "We bid farewell to a true hero, a beacon of hope, and a loyal friend," the North Versailles Police K-9 Unit's tribute to Laky conveyed, as detailed by CBS News Pittsburgh.
