Following community complaints, the Oakland Police Department's Alcohol Beverage Action Team (ABAT) investigated a smoke shop in the 3800 block of San Leandro Street, which led to the seizure of firearms and narcotics paraphernalia. On July 3rd, officers discovered three loaded firearms, including an AR15-style assault rifle with a detachable 30-round magazine and a stolen gun, according to the Oakland Police Department.
During the inspection, ABAT officers also confiscated suspected narcotics paraphernalia and banned flavored tobacco products, cannabis goods, fireworks, and unlawful tobacco products from out of state. The store clerk was cited for possession of fireworks and cannabis for sale—no arrests were made during the operation. However, the case has been forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney’s office for consideration of further action, including civil charges and potential eviction.
This enforcement action by the OPD is part of a larger effort to educate local business owners on the consequences of selling prohibited flavored tobacco products, especially to those under 21. OPD has stressed the importance of holding smoke shops accountable to protect the community's youth and maintain public safety. Community members are encouraged to keep reporting any suspicious activities related to tobacco sales by calling the ABAT Complaint Hotline. To make a report, individuals can dial (510) 777-8677.
