A tragic incident in north Phoenix has claimed the life of a one-year-old boy after he was pulled from a backyard pool. FOX 10 Phoenix reported that the Phoenix Fire Department responded to a distress call near Union Hills Drive and I-17 on Tuesday, around 2 p.m., finding the child unconscious and immediately administered CPR.
Phoenix Police confirmed later that evening that the boy, initially misidentified as a 2-year-old, had succumbed to his injuries after being taken to the hospital in critical condition. As the firefighters arrived on the scene, they saw CPR was in progress. "The patient was found unconscious in a backyard pool with an unknown amount of downtime. CPR was in progress as firefighters arrived on scene. Phoenix PD will be handling the investigation," Capt. Shaun DuBois told FOX 10 Phoenix.
The boy has since been identified by the police as Zion Rodgers. The emergency services were summoned to a residence on Villa Maria Drive shortly after 1:30 p.m. this past Tuesday. AZ Family detailed that the Phoenix Police officers arrived to find firefighters performing CPR on Rodgers. Despite efforts to revive him, the child was declared deceased at the hospital.
While the specifics of how long the child remained in the pool stay unknown, detectives are looking into the circumstances surrounding the drowning. "Detectives responded to take over the investigation. Further details into what led to this terrible incident are under investigation," Phoenix Police conveyed in a statement.
