Orange County is now a bit greener and a lot more modern with the latest launch of its micromobility program. In a move to offer more eco-friendly transportation options, the county has partnered with the scooter services Lime and Bird to introduce some 200 electric scooters along International Drive, according to Orange County's official newsroom.
The newly deployed scooters will offer adults over 18 a nifty way to navigate the International Drive corridor, with rentals available directly through the Bird or Lime apps. The initiative, managed by the Orange County Public Works’s Traffic Engineering Division, spans a stretch from Carrier Drive to Destination Parkway, featuring 10 designated parking areas. And while scooter-sharing options have been rolling out across various cities, this local endeavor marks a significant push towards sustainable travel within the county.
Luz Munoz, Orange County Project Coordinator, expressed emphatic support: “As a passionate advocate of the micromobility program, I am thrilled to witness its soft launch in Orange County.” She highlighted the dual benefits of the program as both a convenient transportation alternative and a step forward in environmental stewardship, as detailed by Orange County's official newsroom.
Given the growing popularity of micro-mobility solutions, Orange County could see an expansion of this program beyond the bustling International Drive should the pilot prove successful. Already, other areas in Florida have embraced similar programs, signaling a potential shift in the transportation landscape toward more personal and eco-conscious options. The program seeks, not just to alleviate traffic congestion, but also to contribute to a greener community overall.
