In what's becoming an increasingly common tale of technological fragility, flights across numerous carriers in the United States have been brought to a standstill due to the lingering effects of a Microsoft outage. Among the affected, Orlando International Airport announced cancellations and delays, a scenario that has played out in numerous hubs nationwide. According to a social media post by the airport, passengers were urged to reach out directly to airlines for information regarding their specific flights, as reported by FOX 35 Orlando.
The incident has not only snarled air traffic but has also broadly impacted sectors including banking and retail. DownDetector, a website that monitors internet outages, tracked the rising tide of issues plaguing companies like Visa, ADT security, Amazon, and multiple airlines such as American Airlines and Delta. Widespread disruptions were notable, with reports coming in from Australia from various businesses, including airlines and banks, as they grappled with the lost access to critical computer systems, as FOX 35 Orlando details. Airlines abroad in the U.K., Europe, and India also experienced significant operational hiccups.
On top of the existing Microsoft 365 troubles, airlines have been hit with separate communication woes, prompting the FAA to issue ground stops for several major carriers. As reported by WFTV, Orlando International Airport was among those confirming that the outages have led to interruptions in their flight schedules. Specifically, the airport faced at least 19 delays and 10 cancellations early on Friday.
