The City of Orlando is forging ahead with its plans to establish a fitting tribute to the victims of the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting, taking a significant step forward by naming the members who will serve on the Pulse Memorial Advisory Committee. According to WESH, the committee will consist of 18 individuals, a blend of survivors, relatives of victims, and local community leaders, all tasked with steering the design of a memorial expected to honor the 49 lives lost in the tragedy.
More than 150 candidates threw their hats into the ring in hopes of guiding the project, the committee’s composition reflecting the diverse voices of those most affected by the Pulse shooting. Public input has been considered an essential component of the process applications were meticulously reviewed without names or identifiable information to ensure a fair and unbiased selection.
Among the committee, survivors such as Keinon Carter and Cesar Rodriguez, and individuals like Jamie Reed and Kelly Dawson, who lost friends or have participated as community members, will help forge a legacy of remembrance through the memorial’s conceptual design. The committee is expected to meet monthly through year's end, starting with an inaugural meeting scheduled for July 24 and 25 at the Kia Center, as detailed by Spectrum News.
The gravity of the task is not lost on the committee, which will be working closely with Larry Schooler, a third-party consultant from Texas, whose experience with mass shooting memorial efforts has been seen as a key asset. Schooler noted that the committee would be a vital component in recommending a fitting tribute by the culmination of 2024. Meetings are announced to be accessible both in-person and virtually, accommodating community members regardless of physical location and offering services in English and Spanish, aiming to engage a broad spectrum of voices, according to WFTV.
The city is extending an olive branch to those still grappling with the 2016 tragedy, providing more opportunities for survivor, family, and community input on July 25 at the Kia Center.
