Night owls and late-shift workers traversing Philadelphia's U.S. 1, better known as the Roosevelt Expressway, should prepare for some shifts in their nightly commute. PennDOT has announced an array of overnight bridge repairs and sign installations as a part of a sweeping $100.6 million project aimed at rejuvenating the Wayne Junction Viaduct, a structure that looms over both SEPTA's metallic pathways and the lived streets of Nicetown.
Drivers should mark their calendars and plan routes accordingly to avoid the forthcoming disruptions started Monday, July 8, lane closures will bind northbound traffic on U.S. 1 between Interstate 76 and Fox Street from 7:00 PM until the early stirrings of morning traffic at 5:30 AM; similar interruptions will cascade through the nights of Tuesday, July 9, and Wednesday, July 10, where motorists will encounter periodic lane closures and 15-minute full halts of motion between 16th Street and 9th Street, all in pursuit of new signage that promises some future clarity but demands present patience.
Southbound voyagers are not spared, as their lanes too will taper off intermittently, starting from 6:00 PM to the muted hush of dawn at 5:30 AM, between the bookends of 9th and 16th Streets on both Tuesday and Wednesday; expectations set by PennDOT counsel adding time to the night's commute, hinting at the crawls and queues that spell delay.
