The travel and tourism landscape of Philadelphia is set for a revamp with Norwegian Cruise Line's announcement to make the city a home port. Come 2026, the Norwegian Jewel will set sail from the Port of Philadelphia, providing locals and visitors alike with an opportunity to embark on various voyages, from the alluring Bermuda to the scenic stretches of Canada and New England. The summer season promises seven-to-nine-day escapades to Bermuda, with the vessel docking overnight for an immersive island experience, and the cooler months bring 10 and 11-day journeys northward, offering a different flavor of exploration.
Norwegian Cruise Line's initiative marks a pivotal moment for the city as it gears up to celebrate the U.S. semiquincentennial in the same year. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, in a statement obtained by PhillyVoice, sees this as a boon, projecting millions of passengers to grace the Philadelphia waterfront. "With all eyes on Philadelphia as we prepare to host our country's 250th birthday in 2026, the Port will continue to help support and grow Philadelphia tourism to create economic opportunity for our region, workers, and businesses," said Shapiro.
The Norwegian Jewel boasts a capacity to accommodate 2,300 guests, set to begin offering these voyages in the spring of 2026. David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line, highlighted the event's significance in a statement to NBC Philadelphia. "As the first passenger cruise line to homeport in Philadelphia in many years, the arrival of Norwegian Jewel is a key milestone for NCL and our partners at the Port of Philadelphia," Herrera said.
Aside from cruising options, 2026 is poised to be a year packed with events for Philadelphia. Michael Pearson, chairman of the PhilaPort board of directors, told CBS News Philadelphia, "We are celebrating the United States' 250th birthday, hosting major sporting events like the FIFA World Cup, MLB All-Star Game, the PGA's 108th Championship, as well as NCAA March Madness games." Pearson expresses his optimism, noting that NCL's weekly cruises will add to the city's festivities and amplify the joy for guests engaging with what Philadelphia has to showcase, both pre- and post-cruise.
