With the mercury set to rise above the 90-degree mark, Pittsburgh's CitiParks department is stepping up to offer residents some much-needed relief. On Monday, July 8, and Tuesday, July 9, six Healthy Active Living Centers across the city will transform into Cooling Centers, providing a respite from the scorching temperatures. These centers are slated to open their doors from 8 AM to 7 PM on both days, as per the City of Pittsburgh.
In efforts to promptly provide relief from the oppressive heat, these centers are strategically located throughout the community. Residents can head to Beechview, Greenfield, Homewood, Sheraden, South Side, and Brighton Heights locations to chill out in the cooler indoor temperatures. Facilities will include the Beechview Healthy Active Living Community Center at 1555 Broadway Avenue and the South Side Healthy Active Living Community Center located at 12th and Bingham Streets, among others. Each center is designed to become a sanctuary against the sweltering outdoor climes.
This initiative is part of a citywide program that emerges in response to public health needs during periods of excessive heat. According to information shared by the City of Pittsburgh, the criteria for activating the cooling centers is clear-cut: whenever forecasted highs are expected to surge past 90 degrees. As climate patterns remain volatile, this service becomes increasingly critical for the safety and comfort of Pittsburgh's most vulnerable populations.
For a full list of locations and their addresses—or to find a cooling center near you—interested individuals are encouraged to visit CitiParks' official announcement. The statement delineates which centers will be open and provides necessary details to help residents find cooling relief. City officials urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to safely beat the heat and to look after those who might not otherwise have the means to escape these high temperatures.
