
Law enforcement in North Portland has made an arrest following a shooting incident that led to growing concerns amongst local residents. According to a statement from the Portland Police Bureau, the Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST) conducted a thorough investigation that culminated in the arrest of 39-year-old Lindell D. Betts on felony charges.
The initial shooting occurred on May 30, at approximately 11:15 p.m. Officers who arrived at the scene on North Lombard Street reportedly found spent casings and was told by witnesses that a suspect had fired shots into the ground. After menacing three individuals with the weapon, he vanished before the authorities got to him, leaving behind a community shaken by the gunfire.
ECST detectives, through their investigative work, identified Betts as the suspect. A report from the Portland Police Bureau details the arrest, which took place on July 3, 2024. Assisted by the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), the ECST executed a search warrant at a residence situated in the 9500 block of North Lombard Street.
Upon serving the warrant, the officers discovered three firearms in the home. Lindell D. Betts, who had previously been convicted of a felony, was indeed found inside. With the assistance of the specialized teams, they arrested the suspect without publicizing further details about the operation. After his arrest, Betbs was transported to the Multnomah County Detention Center. There, he was lodged on charges that include Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.
The arrest of Betts represents a significant step in ongoing efforts to curb gun violence in the area. Considering the prevalence of firearm-related incidents, the ECST's role in addressing community safety concerns is critical.
