Austin's streets prepare for the imminent arrival of President Joe Biden on Monday, as the city marks the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. The President's visit, set against the backdrop of his recent endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination, is expected to cause rolling road closures throughout the day. According to KXAN, Austinites should brace for travel disruptions around Interstate 35 and State Highway 71 as part of heightened security measures.
Although the presidential visit will impart honor on this historically significant day, traffic flow in the city may encounter disruptions. As per a statement obtained by KXAN, the Texas Department of Transportation has advised residents to expect delays and potential street closures, especially between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and the LBJ Library at 2313 Red River Street. With the significant event also prompting a temporary ground stop at Austin's Airport, travelers are being advised to check flight statuses and traffic conditions in advance.
President Biden's decision to commemorate the Civil Rights Act at the LBJ Presidential Library has received praise, despite potential inconveniences to the public. "The fact that he prioritized coming to Austin and being with us is just an enormous thrill for everyone here at the LBJ Library. I hope that people in Austin and around the state feel that same thrill that he chose to come here," Mark Lawrenz, Director of the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum, told CBS Austin.
The President's precise route to the LBJ Library remains undisclosed for security purposes, but likely thoroughfares including Interstate-35, Highway 183, or Highway 71 are on watch for closures. University of Texas at Austin roads such as Dean Keeton Street are expected to join the list of affected areas. AUS officials anticipate minor airport operation impacts, and during the GS no aircraft will be able to take off or land, further suggesting passengers verify their flight plans on the day of the visit.
Although the keynote address at the LBJ Library will be closed to the public, interested individuals can still partake in this historical moment. Live coverage of the event will be available via the KXAN Live stream or the LBJ Library’s livestream, granting an opportunity for reflection on the Civil Rights Act's legacy, and President Biden's ongoing role in its remembrance.
