On Friday, a confrontation unfolded at Sequoia Station in Redwood City between police officers and a man accused of shoplifting and assault. According to the Redwood City Police Department, two officers responded to a disturbance call involving a panhandler at around 8:30 p.m.

The suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Aaron Martinez of Redwood City, was observed by officers entering and exiting a Safeway, carrying two bottles of alcohol without having been inside long enough to purchase them. Upon their attempt to engage, Martinez reportedly assaulted one of the officers with a bottle, initiating a physical altercation that escalated rapidly. A crowd formed around the incident, and their behavior was reportedly antagonistic towards police efforts. Additional San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office units were called in to manage the crowd and ensure officers' safety while arresting Martinez.

Despite the chaos, and after failed attempts to use Tasers on Martinez, the authorities were able to subdue him. Post the skirmish, Martinez was taken to a local hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on multiple charges, including theft, assault with a deadly weapon, assault on an officer, and resisting arrest.

The violent encounter left three officers injured; one officer sustained a fractured ankle, another required stitches for a cut to the head, and the third suffered a minor cut to the hand. After receiving treatment at a hospital, the injured officers were released.
