Rice County Family Services Collaborative has just announced a new round of funding that will channel $447,000 into local organizations over the next two years, beginning July 1, 2024. These grants are earmarked for a diverse array of programs ranging from public school initiatives to chemical and mental health coalitions, all aimed at bolstering family services and support structures within the community.
Among the recipients detailed in an announcement on Rice County's official website, the Community Action Center (CAC) will receive a total of $40,000, split between establishing a certified "diaper bank" and forming a contingency fund for Northfield school district families facing crisis situations. Since it began distributing diapers in 2020, the CAC has struggled to keep up with demand—a testament to the essential nature of such a basic necessity.
The infusion of cash will also aid in the continuation and expansion of the full-service Faribault Community School initiative, which has been credited with improving attendance and graduation rates. Faribault Public Schools are on track to enlarge this successful model, introducing early learning, alternative learning, and the education center into the fold for the 2024-25 academic year.
With a grant of $15,000, the nascent Faribault Youth Empowerment Center (FYEC), formed in June 2023, is set to lay down roots through educational events that connect people from different walks of life. Reflecting a community-centric vision, the initiatives undertaken by FYEC aim to breed empowerment through tailored support structures that engage not just the mind, but also the heart.
Growing Up Healthy will put its $47,500 towards the Mobile Home Rehabilitation Program, a move designed to improve living conditions for families in Faribault and Northfield mobile home communities. Similarly, Healthy Community Initiative in partnership with Northfield Public Schools lays claim to the same amount for the Family Engagement Navigators program, to bridge resource gaps and encourage school attendance.
Furthermore, Northfield Promise and the Rice County Ready for Kindergarten Council are set to receive $46,000, funding that will support a smoother transition for children approaching their kindergarten years. Hope comes anchored in programs that foster strong relationships between families and educational institutions preemptively.
To cap off the list, Northfield Public Schools will utilize a $65,000 grant to expand services in three elementary schools, and the Rice County Chemical and Mental Health Coalition is entrusted with $71,000 aimed at addressing the twin specters of substance abuse and mental health issues amongst the youth.
