Firefighters in Rio Vista worked through the holiday to contain a fire at Rio Vista High School yesterday evening, battling the initial blaze and subsequent fires ignited in surrounding eucalyptus trees, the Rio Vista Police Department reported. The fire was reported while emergency services were already stretched thin, responding to simultaneous calls regarding illegal aerial fireworks displays throughout the city.
Multiple fire units remained on scene even after the initial flames were tamed, facing the precarious task of extinguishing the fire that spread to the highly flammable eucalyptus trees surrounding the high school. The police department indicated in their communication that though the high school fire was contained, the situation required sustained attention.
Consequently, Yosemite Drive saw partial roadblocks, and authorities urged residents to avoid the area to facilitate the operations of the first responders. The only exception was for those who lived in that vicinity, for whom access had to be maintained. In their message, the police department expressed gratitude to the fire departments for their swift response and management of the situation under the constraining circumstances.
