The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) marked its second appearance at the annual San Antonio Pride Parade. Educators, students, and staff proudly donned white T-shirts emblazoned with "familia" in the colors of the rainbow, becoming once again the only school district to participate in the festivities. The group's presence at the event is not merely an aesthetic contribution but a committed stance, visible in their T-shirts which bore the words of Harvey Milk: "Hope will never be silent."

Jolee Leos, an Edison High School student who has faced bullying for their queer identity, found resilience and visibility beneath a pansexual pride flag worn as a cape; embellished with firefly lights it became not just a symbol but a mantle of light in the oft-shadowed journey towards self-acceptance. They were quoted by the San Antonio Report stating, "Now I’m here and I see SAISD does have a place for me. … I feel very accepted, I feel very seen."

Behind the festive facade, the district's decision to join the parade is grounded in a strategic intention to foster inclusivity. According to Michelle Reyes, the district's director of integrated student and family support services, SAISD's involvement in the parade is as much an outreach to LGBTQ+ students and families as it is a celebration of diversity's role in strengthening the community. Reyes hopes the district's participation can serve as a beacon that sparks a wider trend among educational institutions to engage in such civic expressions of solidarity.

Moreover, the board of trustees has not only endorsed but requested that the district engage more intimately with the fabric of the community, as reflected in the district's show of support at other pivotal cultural marches including the Caesar Chavez and MLK marches. Christina Martinez, SAISD Board President, highlighted in a statement obtained by the San Antonio Report “In alignment with the district’s non-discrimination policy, the board and district embrace our entire community.”

This year, approximately 130 SAISD staff members alongside board members and Superintendent Jaime Aquino, showcased their support during the march, a significant jump from the 60 who participated in the previous year. The procession, which saw attendees in school shirts and blinged ensembles, traversed Main Ave, drawing cheers and applause from onlookers—a testament to the community's embracement of diversity. Reflecting on last year's parade, Reyes recounted the poignant moment to the San Antonio Report: “When we rounded the corner, the reception was so overwhelming; people cheering us on, and I think that’s important for our students and our families to see … that everyone is welcome, everyone is included, and everyone is just committed to ensuring that our diversity is vast."
