In a sobering encounter that escalated early Sunday morning, a San Antonio Police Department officer was shot while responding to a domestic violence call on the city's north side. The altercation resulted in the death of the suspect, as reported by KENS 5. Officers arrived at an apartment complex around the 3 a.m. mark, located in the 1300 block of Patricia Drive, upon receiving reports of an assault.
After learning that a woman had been assaulted by her boyfriend, officers entered the apartment, confronting a prone suspect alongside a rifle. The police presence prompted a gunfire exchange, with the suspect opening fire first; the officers shot back before retreating from the scene. "When officers went into the apartment, he was lying in bed with a rifle by his side," SAPD Chief William McManus detailed in a statement posted by KSAT. A female officer was hit several times and is currently receiving medical care post-surgery.
Following the dicey retreat, a SWAT team was commissioned to re-enter the apartment only to find the suspect deceased with at least one gunshot wound. The puzzle of who fired the lethal shot remains unsolved – whether it was the suspect through self-inflicted means or a byproduct of the officers' return fire is yet to be determined. Chief McManus asserted, "We don't know if he took his own life, or whether one of the rounds from the officers took him," as noted in the KENS 5 report.
All three involved officers, with under three years of tenure in SAPD, are under standard proceedings as the event continues to unravel. The officer who underwent surgery post-shooting has been heralded in stable condition by CLEAT, as stated by KENS 5. The assaulted female, meanwhile, was found to have suffered no serious injuries amid the chaos. This incident marks the 14th SAPD-related shooting this year and is not an isolated event in the broader discourse of violence that law enforcement occasionally intersects with.
