San Antonio was the scene of a tense standoff that ended with the arrest of a shooting suspect on the city's Southwest Side. According to KSAT, the ordeal began earlier today around 6:15 a.m., when police were dispatched to the 600 block of Taft for a shooting incident involving a man and a woman, during which the woman sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
San Antonio Police Department identified Carlos Herrera, 35, as the individual who had barricaded himself following an argument that escalated to violence. The victim, a woman in her 30s, was reportedly pistol-whipped and subsequently shot by Herrera. The KENS 5 report details that the woman was taken to the hospital and is currently in critical but stable condition.
Engaging in a hours-long negotiation, SWAT negotiators and SAPD worked to coax Herrera out of the house, according to KSAT. Throughout the standoff, three other individuals exited the residence and were temporarily detained but will not be facing any charges. The intervention escalated as SAPD Chief William McManus noted that the deployment of tear gas was a measure taken when Herrera refused to comply with police demands.
Herrera's efforts to evade capture by hiding in a crawl space and using clothing to shield himself against the effects of the tear gas were eventually foiled. A police dog discovered the suspect amid a pile of sweaters in an attic space. "SWAT was clearing the home room by room and used a dog to locate the man," McManus told KENS 5. Herrera was taken into custody unharmed and will face several charges, including domestic violence and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
No additional injuries were reported during the incident. SAPD has not disclosed what, if any, other items were recovered from the home. This remains a developing story and updates will follow as more information is made available to the public.
