San Diego is charting its future, with City Council recently greenlighting development plans for two key communities. The University Community Plan Update and the Hillcrest Focused Plan Amendment were given the nod, a pivotal move that will dictate the growth and development for the next few decades. These frameworks, as revealed in the City of San Diego, aim to enhance jobs, address housing shortage issues, and uphold the distinct cultures within San Diego.
Under the leadership of Mayor Todd Gloria, the initiatives are celebrated as a leap forward in bolstering the local economy and community diversity. The Mayor envisions Hillcrest and University City as sustainable and inclusive neighborhoods that will continue to flourish for generations.
The University City layout is set to replace a plan from 1987, ushering in close to 29,000 new homes and up to 72,000 jobs. Hillcrest isn't far behind, with a provision for up to 17,200 homes. Councilmember Stephen Whitburn emphasized the influence of Hillcrest residents on the amended plan: “Two dozen public meetings and over 1,600 written comments helped shape a neighborhood vision that values truly affordable housing, supports local small businesses, and celebrates our LGBTQ+ community,” he explained, per the City of San Diego. Additionally, Council President pro Tem Joe LaCava acknowledged the balancing act required to meet diverse priorities with active public participation.
According to District 6 Councilmember Kent Lee, the University Community Plan Update culminates a six-year dialogue and positions the region to capitalize on recent investments such as the Blue Line trolley. The initiative, part of the Blueprint SD project, hopes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by commingling new homes and job opportunities with public transit and essential services.
These plans won't just change skylines; they'll enhance how residents move and connect within their communities. Pedestrian, bicycle, and transit upgrades are on the table, with spaces like plazas where people can gather and socialize. Also, Hillcrest is set to get an LGBTQ+ cultural district, fostering celebration of its history and contribution to the city's diversity.
