The force of the impact pushed the victim's car into a nearby signal pole, while two pedestrians were forced to dash to safety. As reported, the suspect attempted to flee the site of the crash but was detained by several quick-acting witnesses. Police arrived to find the suspect constrained by injuries and unable to escape.
Both the driver and passenger of the vehicle hit by the suspect sustained minor injuries and sought treatment at a local hospital. "Choosing a sober driver is not just about following the law; it’s about saving lives," San Rafael Traffic Sergeant Scott Ingels emphasized in the wake of the crash, as per the San Rafael Police Department. The 18-year-old suspect failed field sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested on felony DUI and hit-and-run charges.
