Yesterday, an early morning patrol in San Rafael's downtown area led to a firearm discovery and an arrest by San Rafael Police Officers. The incident unfolded near Lincoln Avenue and the Mahone Walking Path when officers spotted what they described as a suspicious vehicle, resulting in the discovery of a gun in the possession of a convicted felon.
The San Rafael Police Department reported that the vehicle was backed into a private business driveway on the 700 block of Lincoln Avenue. As officers approached the car containing multiple people, a female passenger left the vehicle abruptly, seemingly to avoid interaction with law enforcement. Officers then contacted the driver and another passenger and observed a methamphetamine pipe inside the vehicle. A subsequent search unveiled the barrel of a handgun beneath the driver's seat, prompting the detention of both individuals for further investigation.
Investigative efforts by the SRPD determined that the driver, whose identity was not disclosed, had prior felony convictions that legally barred him from firearm possession. The driver now faces multiple charges, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of drug paraphernalia. A post by the San Rafael Police Department on social media confirmed the weapon was stolen and held as evidence in this case. The passenger, on the other hand, was released without charges.
