Yesterday at the Transit Mall in Downtown Santa Rosa, a routine SRPD disturbance call evolved into a grave discovery as officers responded to a conflict involving several youths who earlier had been ejected from a Sonoma County Transit bus for unruly behavior. Their aggression escalated to the challenge of physical confrontation, adorned with what appeared to be gang-related hand signals, reported by the City of Santa Rosa.
A group of young people, initially dispersed, returned to the scene about 35 minutes later, drawing the attention of authorities. Police focused on one juvenile who tried to hide a satchel. Upon searching, officers found a loaded Smith & Wesson M&P Shield handgun with a high-capacity magazine containing sixteen 9mm bullets and brass knuckles.
Due to the juvenile's age, their identity has been withheld, but they face multiple felony charges, including carrying a loaded firearm in public and possession as a minor. The severity of the charges is increased due to suspected gang affiliation. The juvenile will be processed at the Juvenile Justice Center.
