The Fourth of July celebrations in Santa Rosa have left the city's police department scrambling to manage the surge in illegal fireworks and associated disturbances. According to a report published by the Santa Rosa Police Department (SRPD), the department confiscated hundreds of pounds of fireworks and seized two illegally possessed firearms during the holiday festivities. The remainder of the long weekend will see continued upstaffing to address the heightened demand for police services.

While the SRPD typically fields between 300 to 350 calls daily, yesterday, they experienced a spike to over 2,000 calls, primarily fueled by the rampant use of illegal fireworks, as well as a rise in alcohol-related and violent crime reports. The elevated call volume necessitates a strategy where dispatchers centralize multiple reports into a single call for service for efficiency, "Instead of creating thousands of redundant calls for service about fireworks in the same areas, one call for service is created for the primary location of the illegal activity, and information from subsequent callers is added to that event", the Santa Rosa Police Department explained. Yesterday, dispatchers generated 223 such centralized calls for service concerning neighborhood fireworks complaints.

SRPD's proactive measures included additional staffing tasked with handling calls related to parties, fireworks and conducting DUI saturation patrols. Firework confiscations spanned throughout the day, with many individuals gathered at MLK Park engaging in illegal activity. The police intervention resulted in not just confiscation but also the prevention of potential harm; a male subject at the park suffered a severe arm injury while handling fireworks.

The department’s Special Enforcement Team (SET), which focuses on stemming illegal firearm possession and gun violence, was also active during the festivities. They arrested a 16-year-old male found carrying a loaded 9mm handgun, and after midnight, apprehended another subject with a concealed loaded 9mm handgun among a group consuming alcohol in public. These arrests, the Santa Rosa Police Department believes, “likely prevented multiple shootings in our community.”

Further details on law enforcement activity and comprehensive data analysis from the July 4th holiday weekend are expected to be shared by the SRPD in the coming week.
