In Santa Rosa, a routine traffic stop escalated quickly when officers discovered not just a minor vehicle code infraction but a cache of illegal substances and firearms. According to the Santa Rosa Police Department, an officer on patrol initiated a stop yesterday after spotting a vehicle without a front license plate, a clear violation of California Vehicle Code 5200(a). The routine procedure took a startling turn as the officer detected a strong aroma of marijuana emanating from the vehicle, accompanied by loose marijuana bud littering the interior.

The situation evolved as the two vehicle occupants initially attempted to deceive the officer with false identities. The subterfuge was eventually penetrated as they were correctly identified as Elman Mejia Mazariegos, a 21-year-old San Rafael resident, and Husvardo Escobar Lopez, age 25, also from San Rafael. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the uncovering of a single 9mm bullet in the center console and, more significantly, the discovery of a privately manufactured 9mm pistol stowed in the trunk.

Responding to this find, Mazariegos was booked into Sonoma County Jail on multiple charges: felony carry of a concealed firearm (25400(a)(1) PC), possession of an undetectable firearm (24610 PC), in addition to misdemeanor offenses for possessing more than 28.5 grams of marijuana (11357(b)(2) HS) and possession of a controlled substance (11350(a) HS). Escobar Lopez faced his own legal challenge, with a booking into the same jail but for an outstanding felony vehicle theft warrant from Contra Costa County.
