The Phoenix community is currently gripped by the pressing urgency of a rescue operation following a devastating roof collapse at a local commercial building. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the incident, which occurred amidst a severe thunderstorm on Wednesday night, has left a worker unaccounted for amidst the debris. The scene at 43rd Avenue and Van Buren Street remains tense as first responders endeavor to navigate the precarious situation.
Efforts throughout Thursday, the Phoenix Fire Department, supported by K-9 units and drones, have met with complexities due to the building's instability. "This is a partial roof collapse right now, so we are worried about secondary collapses. We are working alongside structural engineers, our partners and stakeholders, to make sure that our members are safe to go inside," Phoenix Fire Capt. Todd Keller explained in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix.
An investigation into the incident has confirmed that a microburst with winds reaching up to 77 mph was the cause of the collapse. Non-hazardous materials inventory has allowed for a slower, methodical search process. Dan Kessler, from a local engineering firm, shared insights though not attached to the rescue, "Warehouses, of course, are designed to have maximum amount of open space, and therefore the structural elements that hold it up are very easy to see, and if you have damaged one of those, the damage can be widespread," as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix.
The missing employee's whereabouts at the time of the disaster remain uncertain, a fact complicating the search. "They have given us spots or locations where they think. We’ve had our urban search and rescue dogs go to those points, but we haven’t had any hits," Capt. Keller told AZ Family. Efforts are sustained by unwavering commitment, with Phoenix Fire Capt. Todd Keller assuring, "We will be out here as long as it takes."
