Seattle is gearing up to unveil the much-anticipated Ocean Pavilion at the Seattle Aquarium on August 29, 2024, a project that has been in the works for over twenty years. King5 reports that Bob Davidson, President and CEO of the Seattle Aquarium, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It’s incredible to see this vision brought to life after more than two decades in the making.” As the venue prepares to open its doors to the new expansion, the public is invited to start purchasing their tickets through the Aquarium's website.
The Ocean Pavilion expansion is poised to showcase the splendor of the Coral Triangle's reef ecosystem and will include a plethora of species—among them are sharks, rays, bowmouth guitarfish and schooling fish, alongside nearly 30 species of coral, as mentioned by FOX 13 Seattle. The addition is expected to significantly enhance tourist traffic to the waterfront, drawing more visitors to an area that has undergone massive redevelopment since the Alaskan Way Viaduct's removal in 2019, and visitors should act quickly as interest in the new exhibit is expected to surge with the debut of these incredibly diverse marine environments.
Owned by the city and managed by the nonprofit Seattle Aquarium Society, the Aquarium currently welcomes 850,000 guests annually. With the new installment, they anticipate these numbers will swell to over 1.2 million visitors per year, further signaling the expansion's potential impact on both the institution and the community it serves. The Seattle Times has revealed the price tag for the expansion to be $160 million, a piece of the broader, more than $800 million investment into the waterfront's redevelopment funded by the city, state, private donors, and a special tax on downtown property owners through local improvement money.
In addition to the aquatic wonders below, the structure itself is set to become an intersection of nature and urban design; this fall, its rooftop will offer a connection to the city's pedestrian bridge, merging the new with the established in a seamless flow that exemplifies the innovative spirit inherent to the city. This project marks the first completed phase of the extensive renovation efforts of Seattle's downtown waterfront, acting as a harbinger for future developments and the enduring vibrancy of the heart of the city as reflected in this multi-faceted initiative.
