Seattle City Councilmember Tammy J. Morales has expressed support for the decision to terminate Seattle Police Department Officer Daniel Auderer after he was recorded making derogatory remarks about Jaahnavi Kandula, a victim killed in an SPD-related incident. In a recent statement, Morales underscored the importance of continuing to address the culture and accountability within the police department.

While commending the decision, Morales lamented the delay, highlighting that it took over a year for action to be taken. In a push for further transparency and reform, Morales has called upon SPD leadership to deliver a comprehensive strategy for addressing systemic issues. After the offending video surfaced in September 2023, Morales had previously requested a detailed action plan from the then-Chief Diaz, which remains undelivered.

There is a history of incidents that have eroded the public's trust in the SPD. This becomes evident in the underlying events surrounding Officer Kevin Dave, who was involved in Kandula's fatality and whose disciplinary outcome is still pending. Also surfaced were reports questioning Dave's history and the status of his driving qualifications prior to his recruitment by SPD – raising alarms about both the vetting processes for new officers and the mechanisms in place for holding them accountable.

Moreover, Morales touched on the culture within the SPD, referencing a disturbing incident from the previous year – a fake tombstone mocking Damarius Butts, a young man killed by police was displayed alongside a Trump campaign flag inside a department break room. Such displays and multiple lawsuits filed against SPD alleging discrimination show the existing, complex challenges the department faces concerning its internal culture.

In her statement, Councilmember Morales noted, "This decision is a step in the right direction. However, it shouldn’t have taken a year and a half to happen." She emphasized the urgent need for a clear and actionable plan to regain the community's trust and to ensure the execution of SPD's duties with integrity. Morales vows to keep pushing for this outcome.
