The National Weather Service in Knoxville has issued a stark weather advisory for today, indicating that the region faces a significant chance of severe weather, with "multiple rounds of storms" expected and potential for damaging winds, according to a statement released early this morning. Parts of southwest North Carolina, east Tennessee, and southwest Virginia are on alert for vigorous storms that could bring about flash flooding through late tonight, intensifying concerns for regions already saturated by recent precipitations.
The probability of these weather conditions has instigated a flood watch "through late tonight," as issued by the National Weather Service Morristown TN. Forecasters warn of "flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall," impacting numerous locales across several states, with areas receiving 2 to 3 inches of rainfall within the last 24 to 48 hours now preparing for another batch of storms anticipated to deliver an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain, though some locations could witness even higher amounts, the advisory suggests that the storms today could be severe with the main concern being damaging winds, and there's also a low-end threat for a brief spin-up tornado.
In addition to storm threats, the weather outlook points towards an interrupted sequence of sweltering afternoons for the midweek, particularly around Knoxville and southern valleys where afternoon heat index values may soar above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, potentially posing health risks amidst the humidity-laden air mass hovering in the region. These conditions underscore the importance of heeding local advisories and preparing for both the abrupt onset of severe weather and the slow-burning danger of oppressive heat.
Residents and visitors of the affected areas, which include vast swathes from Tennessee counties like Knox, Hamilton, and Sullivan to Virginia's Lee and Wise, are strongly encouraged to monitor the forecasts closely and "be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued," The National Weather Service urges extra caution near rivers, creeks, streams, and known flood-prone spots as the excess runoff could rapidly elevate water levels and wreak havoc on low-lying areas, while spotters are welcome to report flooding and damaging winds which may help in anticipating and mitigating the effects of these meteorological events.
