A South Los Angeles man named Sergio Macias, also known as "Checho," was arrested following a federal grand jury indictment that alleges he took part in a series of armed carjackings across Los Angeles County. The 22-year-old Macias, having surrendered to federal law enforcement, is slated for arraignment in downtown L.A.'s United States District Court, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California.
The indictment, which charges Macias along with three accomplices—Michael Anthony Fisher, "Ghost," of Bell; Andres Silva Cerrillos, "Ruler," of Buena Park; and Jesse Gutierrez, "Lotto," of Los Angeles—includes one count of conspiracy to commit carjacking and various counts of carjacking, attempted carjacking and firearms offenses over a span from November 15 to December 9 of last year, the series of crimes not only resulted in the theft of five vehicles but also two large-screen televisions. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the alleged spree included threats of violence against a Walmart employee in South Gate during the theft of the TVs.
"Violent gun crime tears at the fabric of our community and leaves victims with lasting trauma," United States Attorney Martin Estrada stated. As reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, the defendants, if convicted, are staring down the barrel for a minimum of seven years and up to 25 years in federal prison. These charges carry the particular weight of the federal justice system in a concerted effort to address the individuals most responsible for violent crimes.
