In a concerted crackdown on hazardous roadway behavior, over 80 police departments throughout Southeast Pennsylvania are set to mobilize against aggressive driving, this multi-county operation spearheaded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) along with local forces and the state police will focus on major safety concerns including pedestrian safety, red light violations, and tailgating, the initiative which extends until August 18 falls within a statewide effort to improve the safety of Pennsylvanians on the roads.
The targeted enforcement will also keep a sharp eye out for speeding and heavy truck violations, with officers employing a variety of tactics such as corridor and saturation patrols, all in a bid to mitigate the incidence of crashes and the grim figures accompanying them; as per a statement by PennDOT, the region witnessed 1,363 aggressive driving crashes in 2023 alone, resulting in 39 fatalities and over a hundred with serious injuries.
Drivers caught in the act of aggressive conduct on the road can expect zero tolerance, with PennDOT firmly stating that each will be ticketed, these enforcement waves, fueled by federal resources from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), aim to bring down the distressing aggressive driving-related crashes, injuries, and deaths that plague the state's roads.
