San Antonio Spurs icon Sean Elliott was recently reminded that his greatest assists sometimes come from unexpected teammates—like his Apple Watch. Elliott's wife, Claudia Zapata, shared via an Instagram post that the smart device caught a serious health warning, an irregular heartbeat indicative of Atrial Fibrillation. In case you're not fluent in medical jargon, that's when your heart turns chaotic and potentially dangerous. And as Claudia noted in the FOX San Antonio article, "Sean wasn’t experiencing any symptoms, but for the last couple of weeks, his Apple watch had been warning him he was in Atrial Fibrillation."
Without missing a beat, Elliott was quickly in the hands of Methodist Health Care San Antonio's cardiology team. There, they performed a set of tests to really to thoroughly understand his heart's rhythm before diving into a procedure known as cardioversion—essentially a reset for the heart. As detailed by KSAT, Claudia expressed gratitude, saying, "Grateful for the gift of health, an Apple Watch, and the very best healthcare system!"
This is not the first time Elliott has faced a health scare while under the spotlight. During the Spurs' ascent to their first championship in 1999, Elliott underwent a kidney transplant due to focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. With his brother stepping up as the donor, Elliott returned to the court to score the pivotal "Memorial Day Miracle" shot, contributing to his team's victory.
