St. Petersburg residents who are bracing themselves for the churn and surge of hurricane season now have additional opportunities to shore up their defenses in the calm before potential storms. The city has recently extended its non-emergency sandbag distribution hours to include the second Saturday of every month. According to an announcement on the City of St. Petersburg official website, St. Pete's prepares to offer sandbags on July 13, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Pavement and Traffic Operations Building.

This extension comes not as a mere convenience but a necessary adjustment to ensure that all residents, especially those bound by the restraints of regular work hours, have equal chances to protect their homes. During emergency declarations for storms, sandbag distribution locations and hours will change, the city's announcement said, emphasizing that the added hours are to facilitate preparation during times when picking up sandbags might not clash with residents' employment obligations.

The Pavement and Traffic Operations Building, located at 1744 9th Ave. N., will serve as the central hub for sandbag pickups. Regular distribution hours are maintained Monday through Friday, in addition to the newly instituted Second Saturday schedule.

Each household within St. Petersburg limits is eligible to receive up to 10 sandbags. To claim their allotment, residents are asked to bring proof of residence. The city’s website states, “Staff will be on hand to assist seniors and others who may be unable to fill and load their own sandbags,” ensuring that the service is accommodating to all needs. It's a recognition that the community thrives by lifting each other, bracing together as the winds howl and waters threaten.

St. Pete residents can find out more about the sandbag distribution and keep up to date on changes by visiting City of St. Petersburg official websites.
