Hawai‘i Island police have apprehended a suspect following a robbery and assault incident that rattled downtown Hilo last week. The man taken into custody has been identified as 32-year-old Kukaua Keli’iho’oluhi Kaupe Bright, who currently lacks a permanent residence. Bright was arrested Yesterday, at 3:15 p.m., and is believed to be connected to the confrontation that unfolded on July 9.

According to the police report, on the afternoon of the incident, two men were assaulted while performing contracted survey work for the County of Hawai'i. Said survey involved the operation of a drone off Ponahawai Street. The victims felt compelled to pack up their gear when a group of men approached them in a manner that suggested hostility. The situation escalated when the victims were halted by the men, who demanded explanations for their presence in the area.

The ordeal turned violent after the contractors clarified their intent, resulting in them being physically assaulted while seated in their vehicle. Reported injuries included facial harm and a chipped tooth for one of the victims. During the assault, one suspect reached into the vehicle and stole a driver’s license and drone pilot license from one of the contractors. The victims managed to drive away and subsequently contacted the authorities.

The investigation by the Area I Criminal Investigation Section is ongoing. As reported on Nixle, "As of this time, Bright has not been charged." Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information relevant to the case to reach out to Detective Jeremy Kubojiri.
