At approximately 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the 1300 Block of North C Street after receiving reports of an altercation. Upon their arrival, they found an adult female with at least one puncture wound. Sacramento Fire Department personnel endeavored to administer life-saving measures but were unable to revive the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the Sacramento Police Department reported.

Detectives and crime scene investigators were summoned to thoroughly investigate the incident. Their efforts to fully understand the circumstances of the altercation are ongoing. In efforts to rapidly to gather evidence, they processed the crime scene, canvassed the neighborhood, and conducted interviews with witnesses. As part of the subsequent investigation, detectives managed to identify a suspect in connection with the homicide.

Later in the day, the suspect was located and detained by law enforcement. A statement released by the Sacramento Police Department's Facebook page names 54-year-old Kevin Birdsong as the individual arrested on charges related to the homicide. The identity of the deceased has yet to be officially disclosed pending notification of the next of kin by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
