San Diego has witnessed a significant breakthrough in a series of armed robberies that had residents on edge: the arrest of 22-year-old Anthony Caleb Johnson. The San Diego Police Department (SDPD), alongside the El Cajon Police Department, announced they had Johnson in custody after a collaborative effort to track down the individual responsible for crimes in their jurisdictions. As detailed in a press statement released by the San Diego Police Department, investigators relied on information from victims and witnesses. They utilized technology to trace Johnson's vehicle through the Automated License Plate Recognition system.
The recent spate of criminal activity, involving four separate incidents, was halted after investigators from both SDPD and the El Cajon PD joined forces to address the frightening pattern that unfolded last Wednesday morning. These incidents included two victims robbed at gunpoint in Pacific Beach, followed by a 7/11 store on Clairemont Dr., another 7/11 on Clairemont Mesa Blvd., and a 7/11 in El Cajon, where suspects, wearing masks and hooded sweatshirts, used a firearm to demand cash from clerks before confidently escaping, at least until now.
The successful capture of Johnson on July 13th resulted from observing officers and dispatchers' quick coordination and use of the ALPR system, which indicated the suspect's vehicle was present in all locations at the time of the crimes. The first victim incident near 4500 Mission Blvd provided a crucial clue, wherein the suspects sported distinctive tattoos, aiding in the later identification of Johnson, who was associated with a gray Ford Taurus.
