Marina del Rey's Marina City Club condominium complex has been gripped by a troubling series of fires, surveying residents and local authorities as they scramble to address the suspected arson incidents that have been recurrent since May. According to NBC Los Angeles, residents experience a startling regularity of emergency responses, with fire engines and flashing lights becoming all too common sights.
Longtime resident Teri Hirano has voiced her concern with a haunting question: "Are we going to wake up one day and open the door and there's a fire out there?" as reported by NBC Los Angeles. The condo’s management has alerted residents through email, suspecting that the fires may have been set intentionally by individuals possibly residing within the community. This has left the residents on high alert, without a clear resolution in sight.
Incidents at the complex have included fires started with combustible materials such as toilet paper, and lighter fluid near a public bathroom. "Everyone at the marina city club is concerned about all of the fires," Hirano told FOX LA. She also expressed particular worry for the safety of seniors and disabled individuals living in the complex's high-rise buildings, emphasizing the peril they face with stairs being the only escape route during fires.
The specter of the California Yacht Club fire in December looms over these incidents. The cause of that fire, which injured two firefighters, is still yet to be known, causing additional anxiety among the Marina Club residents. Hirano, driven by a sense of urgency, has attempted to mobilize a response, reaching out to various officials with minimal success. NBC Los Angeles notes that Natasha Robinson from the Department of Beaches and Harbor has been one of the few officials actively engaging with the situation, having written letters to the management about the ongoing saga.
