In a tragic incident on Wednesday evening, a 13-year-old girl lost her life to a bullet in Alderwood Mall, Lynnwood, as a fight escalated in the food court, where a teenage boy discharged a firearm amidst the chaos; the victim, uninvolved in the conflict, succumbed to her injuries thereafter.
The altercation led to a state of panic, with the mall going into lockdown and witnesses recounting the harrowing ordeal, "It was very jawdropping and very scary," a mall employee named Jacobo described the terror of the moment to KOMO News, "Initially, we heard a very loud boom, which we thought was somebody dropping something. But then we saw what happened, and we started evacuating people into our store and closing our doors, and evacuating people into the back of our doors. Then we had to go back out into our emergency exits.".
Police swiftly responded to the incident as Lynnwood Police Department's Deputy Chief Patrick Fagan explained to KING 5, revealing that after the dispute in the food court led to gunfire right after 6 p.m., an immediate search for the assailant began; meanwhile, the weapon involved has not been recovered, but investigations continue with all available leads being pursued.
No arrests were made on site, however, a breakthrough was achieved when the suspect's mother took a pivotal step towards justice by turning in her 16-year-old son who was allegedly behind the trigger, as detailed in a social media post referenced by MyNorthwest, the post also specified the suspect's custody status and the intent to book him for murder, demonstrating a parental confrontation with the grim reality of a situation no family should have to face.
