A Texas couple's fate has been cemented with decades-long sentences for their roles in a methamphetamine distribution network. Joseph Ivy, age 45, received a 37-year prison sentence, handed down in a federal court in Del Rio for conspiracy to import and distribute methamphetamine. His spouse, Yvette Contreras, age 35, was sentenced earlier this year, on April 13, to serve 25 years for her involvement in the same conspiracy. Their actions have been described not merely as criminal enterprise, but as a direct line feeding the destructive impact of drugs into their community.
Details of the drug operation were laid bare when deputies from the Dimmit County Sheriff’s Office, better known as the DCSO, executed a search warrant on August 18, 2020 at the couple's home in Catarina. Officials uncovered not only 1.5 kgs of methamphetamine but also $7,389 in cash, two firearms, and a revealing ledger of narcotic transactions. Later, in a separate incident detailed by court documents, during a traffic stop on Aug. 21, 2023, deputies managed to further seize 2.4 kgs of methamphetamine from Ivy's vehicle.
Ivy admitted in part to transporting substantial quantities of methamphetamine spanning different locations, admitting to having moved three kgs to Moorhead, Minn., and a further four kgs to Charlotte, Texas. According to a report from the United States Attorney's Office Western District of Texas, the couple was working in tandem with a third defendant, Margaret Charles Garcia, who on at least two separate occasions, trafficked methamphetamine from Mexico at Ivy's behest. Garcia pleaded guilty on March 7, 2022, to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and is set to hear her sentence on October 2. "These traffickers worked directly with Mexican drug cartels to bring loads of harmful narcotics into our communities and peddle them for a profit," said Attorney Jaime Esparza for the United States Attorney's Office Western District of Texas.
Deputy Special Agent in Charge Alejandro Amaro for the Homeland Security Investigations San Antonio Division stated "This Texas couple pushed large amounts of methamphetamine onto South Texas streets, and this lengthy prison sentence officially puts them out of business. HSI is committed to disrupting prolific drug traffickers like Joseph Ivy and Yvette Contreras - criminals with no regard for the incredible damage they inflict on so many lives and communities," as mentioned by the United States Attorney's Office Western District of Texas.
