In an effort to assist those hit by the havoc wrought by Hurricane Beryl, Governor Greg Abbott has announced that Fort Bend and Washington counties have been included in the automatic SNAP benefit replacements program, bringing the total to 20 counties in Texas where SNAP recipients can count on this relief. According to a statement on the governor's website, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission has secured the necessary federal nod to expedite aid to these communities, ensuring that residents can replenish the food lost in the storm's wake.
"As Texans continue to recover following the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, eligible Texans in Fort Bend and Washington counties will be able to have their SNAP benefits automatically replaced for food that was lost or destroyed during Hurricane Beryl," Governor Abbott expressed with assurance of continued recovery efforts and the HHSC's collaboration with federal partners was instrumental in pushing this initiative forward, allowing families to refill their kitchens with healthy, fresh food.
People who rely on SNAP in the identified counties will see a portion of their July benefits automatically deposited to their Lone Star Cards by July 30, as detailed on the governor's official website. This move is aimed at quick relief, but it is not exhaustive in its scope; SNAP recipients may further request an increase up to their entire monthly stipend, providing a much-needed safety net for those still grappling with the crisis.
Additional benefits can be solicited by dialing 2-1-1 and choosing Option 8, or by downloading and completing Form H1855 from the state's website. Texans outside the automatic replacement program's purview aren't left adrift; they can also request SNAP replacements, per instructions outlined on the HHSC Receiving Disaster Assistance page, and broader assistance is available at YourTexasBenefits.com or through their mobile app. For food and shelter needs, Texans are encouraged to dial 2-1-1 and select Option 1.
