The Woodlands Township board is clearly in a state of growth as it gave the green light to a $4.3 million project designed to expand the Town Hall, Parks and Recreation Headquarters, and Fire Department facilities. According to the Houston Chronicle, the parks and recreation department's expansion includes a new 4,500-square-foot annex to the existing buildings. This expansion seeks to mitigate the cramped quarters that have evolved as the department's staff and responsibilities have grown over the years.
With 150 parks, 14 pools, and a burgeoning workforce that includes 350 seasonal employees who mainly work outside of the office, The Woodlands' parks and recreation department is reportedly bursting at the seams. "I was shocked when we did a tour when we first got elected how cramped (it is)," board member Ann Snyder told the Houston Chronicle, highlighting the immediate need for the expansion. In addition, the Community Impact reports that the plans include a myriad of departments, such as parks planning/construction and environmental services, within its campus.
Aside from the parks and rec upgrades, the township is also proceeding with plans for a sizable extension of its town hall. The Community Impact mentions that the town hall's addition will span 13,000 square feet to accommodate a growing staff. Furthermore, a brand new fire station is on the horizon to replace the existing Station 5, with the aim of addressing current structural issues and better serving the Sterling Ridge community.
Indeed, this financial commitment of nearly $400,000 just for the initiation of the parks and rec project demonstrates a recognition of not only present strains but an anticipation of The Woodlands' future needs. "You guys are busting at the seams," township board member Cindy Heiser stated, mirroring a sentiment of progress echoed widely among the board members. Promising a legitimate fire poles and more room for essential public services, Chief Palmer Buck from the fire department is set to deliver the final cost for the new fire station during budget workshops scheduled for August 19, as the Houston Chronicle highlights.
